Sutherland - a place to see the stars

Sutherland, although a small dot on the map, it has become famous because of it's atmosphere being clear enough to enable scientists to 'see' successfully into deep space.  As one approaches the town from the Frazerburg side, in the distance the large telescopes beginning to protrude from the barren mountain top shimmering in the hot afternoon sun. (see third picture)

The road is dirt up until the turn-off to the Observatory which is about seven kilometers from the town.  The vegetation in the area is scrub bush with virtually no trees.  Rainfall is at an absolute minimum hence the wonderful clear skies for much of the year.
